Native American Hunter/Gatherers of South Texas: Observations by Cabeza de Vaca

In November, 1528, the Spanish explorer Cabeza de Vaca was shipwrecked along the Texas coast.   He lived and traveled among the Native peoples of South Texas and Northern Mexico until 1536.  His writings provide us with a wonderful description of the cultures of South Texas, especially the Coahuiltecans, almost 500 years ago.  As part of Native American Heritage Month, the presentation “Native American Hunter-Gatherers of South Texas: Observations by Cabeza de Vaca” will examine some of the interesting facets of Native American life in South Texas during the period when Coahuiltecans first came into contact with Europeans.

James Everett has participated in prehistoric and historic period archeological projects in many areas of Texas as well as in New Mexico and Arizona.  He is a Past President of the TexasArcheological Society, the Immediate Past President of the North Texas Archeological Society, and an Archeological Steward for the Texas Historical Commission.
